TAIPEI: Popular Taiwanese television host Jacky Wu's wife Chang Wei-wei was reportedly admitted to hospital for an operation to remove tumours from her breast last week.

Chang has been recovering at the Cathay General Hospital in Taipei for the past five days.

The 47-year-old wanted to maintain a low profile and requested to be warded at the hospital's burn centre. Guards patrolled the entrance to her ward daily while a non-descript sign on the door only displayed "Name withheld, 47 years old, female", however the ward's staff have confirmed she had been admitted.

When reporters spoke to Wu about his wife's operation, he was surprised the media knew about her condition but went on to explain the circumstances.

"Doctors discovered two lumps in the area between her left breast and her armpit five years ago. After monitoring them for years, they showed signs of expansion and contained some malignant cells so doctors suggested that we remove them," said Wu.

"I was not in Taipei when she had the removal operation but I visited her daily after I returned. She is recovering very well," he added. "What she needs the most now is rest. She will be transferred to a normal ward in a few days and will soon be discharged."

Chang has been married to Wu, 47, since 1990 and the couple have four children. She has always kept an extremely low profile even after their union. She appeared before the media for the first time as Wu's wife in 2000, when she smiled and bowed to reporters in front of the apartment building she and Wu lived in.

At that time, Chang said she only decided to identify herself and make known her relation to Wu because the popular host continued to see other women and denied that he was married. She rarely appeared in the media after that incident.

Wu has reportedly had affairs with a string of voluptuous ladies, from celebrity Chen Hsiao-hsuan, to a mysterious woman only known as "Candy" and an assistant named "Angela". Wu once told the Taipei Times in an interview in 2000 that "he loved to fool around" but claimed "there was nothing wrong with his lifestyle".

Despite being romantically linked to numerous women, Wu did not neglect his wife. He forked over a large sum to help Change open a health and fitness centre in 2005 and just gave her a 3 million Taiwan dollar (S$130,000) silver Jaguar as a birthday present in May earlier this year.

The pair now reportedly behave like a loving old couple and are said to be focusing on taking care of their children.
