BEIJING : Playing a high-ranking general in "Little Big Soldier", a film written and produced by kung fu star Jackie Chan, was a role that Taiwanese singer Wang Lee-hom could not refuse.

But according to Chinese media reports, Taiwanese star Jay Chou was actually the first choice for the role.

"Little Big Soldier", a comedy-action film set during the warring states period in China, also stars Korean actor Yoo Seung-jun and Chan who plays a foot soldier that played dead and survived a great battle.

Chan's character takes the opposing army's general (played by Wang), who was injured during the battle, as his prisoner and tries to turn in the general to his own leader for a reward.

Jay Chou was said to have been the original pick for the general's role but Chan's wife, Lin Feng-Jiao, advised against it.

Lin said both Chan and Chou had a steely gaze so the latter would not be able to bring out the contrasting personalities of the characters they played.

She then suggested Wang, whom she said had a softer, refined look that contrasted well against Chan's rough and tumble film persona.

When Wang was offered the role, he jumped at the chance as he was attracted by the film's plot, though he knew that shooting it would be a gruelling process.

His features were perpetually obscured by mud and 'bloodstains' while playing the prisoner of Chan's character, but Wang says he did not mind.

"This is a very challenging role and it really tests my acting ability. I learned a lot and walked away with a lot of experiences so I don't find it difficult at all," he said.
