SINGAPORE: Her name is Inch Chua but she's going some 9,837 miles in her quest for a full-time music career.
The 21-year-old is the first Singapore solo artist selected to perform at one of the world's largest music industry gatherings, the South By Southwest music festival in the United States.
Inch Chua is not content merely painting her dreams. This March, she will live them out when she flies to Texas, complete with guitar, gadgets and gizmos.
She said: "I’d bring my guitar to SXSW. Her name's Ruby Blue. If I could I'd bring Mr Ricky, who's my dog by the way. But I can't. I'll be bringing my trusty laptop. If it dies on me, my life would just end."
The solo artiste is known for never having sold her own music, preferring instead to distribute it free online, and earn money through live shows instead.
She said: “The focus should be put on live shows because we're bringing it back old school, where the artists put more heart and soul in performances. Now with the Internet and everything, it's so much easier to just put your music out there for free and encourage people to come down to shows - pay to watch the live shows and enjoy the experience of being part of the music.”
But aiming for the big time is not easy.
She explained: "I've applied to various government bodies such as NAC for grants as well as SIF but I haven't got a reply yet."
So for now, her bedroom's where all the action is. But if Inch gets more breaks in Texas, she's hoping to go miles further. - CNA/vm
