SINGAPORE : The sixth season of the sitcom "Police And Thief" will air on Tuesday. It's also the final season, so this is the last time you'll get to Mark Lee, who stars as the "thief" component of the titular duo.
Fans of the show might notice some changes for this farewell season. Margaret Lee, who plays his wife, has been replaced this season by Sharon Wong ('80s Rewind). Wong is not the only "new" face on the series. There'll be lots of guest stars including Chew Chor Meng, Moses Lim, Andrea Fonseka and Richard Low.
For Lee, who said he used to play police and thief as a child ("Initially, I was the thief, but nobody could capture me, because I was very violent. I'd throw mud or stones ... So they made me the policeman, so that they could throw things at me!"), this last season ups the ante.
"It's funnier," said Lee. "The police and the thief go and investigate a lot of the cases together, which is more fun - it's not just them arguing. They work together - in a funny way, of course."
For his part, Lee said there are quite a few things he'll miss about the show.
Firstly, he'll miss co-star Suhaimi Yusof, who plays the policeman. Or rather, miss the opportunity to take digs at Suhaimi's expanse.
"When I see him walking into the studio, I go, 'Oh, the truck is coming'," Lee cackled.
"In the first series, his body was a 29-inch TV. Now, he's become a 57-inch plasma. Every year, he gets bigger! But working with him is a very happy thing."
The cultural significance of the show is also not lost on Lee .
"I think that besides the good script and its humour, a primary reason for 'Police And Thief's' success is the fact that a Malay and a Chinese have been paired up. A story like this has not been told," said Lee.
Lee said he'll also miss teaching the show's producers English. Yes, you read right.
"They have fun working with me because I always give them English words they've never heard of, especially pronunciations they've never heard in their lives," he joked. "So actually, they learn a lot of English from me!
"Working in English is definitely very challenging for me," he continued. "Every year my English improves for the three months when I work on 'Police And Thief'.
"But after it's done, nobody regularly speaks to me in English, so the next season, I have to start over. I don't mind being involved for three months a year, but if you asked me to do English programmes every two months, I'd say no!"
The final season of "Police And Thief" starts on Tuesday, 8pm on Channel 5.
