NEW YORK - After delays from surgery on his diamond-encrusted teeth and a courthouse fire, rapper Lil Wayne was finally due to be sentenced to prison Monday on a gun possession charge.

Wayne, 27, was expected to be handed a one-year sentence in New York criminal court as part of a plea deal in which he pleaded guilty to attempted possession of a loaded semi-automatic handgun.

The Grammy-winning performer had been set for sentencing on March 2 but got an unexpected extra week of freedom when a fire broke out in the Manhattan court complex just hours before his hearing.

The sentencing had already been postponed by a court order to allow Wayne to undergo extensive work on his glittering teeth.

According to pop music site MTV.com, "Wayne has spent his unexpected free time partying in NYC, travelling back to his Miami home and, of course, recording."

The diminutive, heavily tattooed singer, winner of four Grammys in 2009, pleaded guilty in October to the attempted weapons charge after a .40 caliber pistol was found on his tour bus, although not actually in his possession.

Wayne, whose was born Dwayne Michael Carter, could be out of prison in as little as eight months if he demonstrates good behaviour. - CNA/vm
