SINGAPORE: The nominees for the annual Star Awards Top 10 Most Popular Male/Female Artistes were unveiled at The Fullerton Hotel on Thursday.
Nominees like evergreen actor Huang Wen Yong, actresses Hong Hui Fang and Michelle Chia took turns to randomly draw the telepoll number their supporters can call to vote for them. Artistes who could not turn up got their telepoll numbers selected by those present.
Notable entrants include Joshua Ang, who has been nominated for this award for the very first time, and veteran actress Xiang Yun, who will be picking up her tenth award should she win this year.
Artistes who have won this award ten times will be named an "All-Time Favourite Artiste" - actors Christopher Lee and Mark Lee are joint recipients of this award this year - and will no longer be eligible for nominations in this category in subsequent years.
"I wasn't expecting myself to be in [among the nominees]... but I am quite glad," said Ang, 21, though he does not think he "stands a chance" of getting into the Top 10 list considering the artistes he is up against.
Veteran actor Huang, who, like Xiang Yun is part of the first generation of Singapore televison artistes, was also skeptical of his own chances.
"I have been nominated countless times since the inception of the Star Awards but I was always knocked out when they picked the final 12," lamented Huang. "[I'm] not like Xiang Yun who wins almost every time she is nominated."
For the first time, the Star Awards will consist of three distinct parts, a lead up series titled "Blazing the Trail", two 'live' award ceremonies and the post-show party which will also be broadcast 'live'.
"Star Awards 2010 Show 1", held on April 18, will honour production staff like scriptwriters and backstage crew.
The results of the Top 10 Most Popular Artistes poll will be revealed 'live' during the "Star Awards 2010 Show 2" on April 25 on Channel 8.
The telepoll lines for the Top 10 Most Popular Male/Female Artistes will be open till April 25, 9pm.
Each call costs S$0.80 (excluding GST) and callers bellow 18 years old must seek parental consent.
Mobile phone pre-paid card holders and overseas phone lines will not be able to call in their votes.
