BEIJING: Taiwan singer Elva Hsiao has revealed that she underwent cosmetic surgery to get double eyelids in March last year at her late mother's behest, reported Chinese media.
When asked about her eye make-up, which appeared to make her eyes look larger and more expressive, Hsiao told reporters during the Music Radio Awards in Beijing in March that she had actually gone for a procedure that used sutures to create double eyelids and make her eyes seem bigger.
The 30-year-old singer said that the NT$15,000 (S$660) procedure had improved her luck as well.
"Not only do my eyes look bigger, my luck is getting better. My album ("Diamond Candy") became an immediate hit," said Hsiao, who added that she had snagged quite a number of music awards, and managed to avoid getting into bad relationships since her surgery.
Hsiao went on to explain that she opted to use the suture method as she could resume her normal activities in just one week after the procedure, compared to the "three to four months to recover from a traditional operation to cut double eyelids" which was "too long".
Hsiao also pointed out that the procedure shaved one hour off the time she needed to put on make-up and go out.
"I rather spend that extra hour sleeping instead of putting on make-up," she said, during a promotional event in Taiwan on Monday.
Previously, Hsiao had to spend two hours putting on eye make-up, painstakingly position false eyelashes and apply tape to her eyelids to create the illusion that she had double eyelids. She takes an hour more if she needs to do her hair.
According to her manager, Hsiao once kept singer Stanley Huang waiting for almost three hours while she dolled herself up, before attending an event with him.
