HONG KONG: Former Hong Kong actress Gigi Lai gave birth prematurely to twin daughters on Saturday via Caesarean section at the Canossa Hospital in Hong Kong, reported Hong Kong media.
"I am very happy! Gigi has given birth to twin daughters. One weighs six pounds (2.73kg) and the other weighs three (1.36kg). Both the mother and children are fine," announced Lai's businessman husband Patrick Ma soon after the birth.
Ma, who was smiling throughout his interactions with the press gathered at the hospital, said he has yet to name his children but will do so at a later date.
"I have been thinking of a lot of names but have not decided which to use," said an ecstatic Ma.
The 53-year-old businessman also expressed that he would not release photographs of the twins to protect their privacy.
When asked if the couple had any plans for more children, he replied that he had not thought about it.
Ma has plenty to be happy about as it marked the end of his arduous quest to have kids.
He and Lai, 39, were determined to have children since they tied the knot in February last year.
Lai even changed her Chinese name in December, from "Li Zi" to "Li Jia Er", which sounds the same phonetically as the phrase "adding a son", on the advice of her geomancer, in hopes of getting children.
Months later, she finally conceived after visiting fertility specialists and spending about HK$300,000 (S$60,000) on artificial insemination procedures.
Lai was then admitted to hospital in July due to bleeding during her pregnancy, sparking fears that she might miscarry.
Fortunately, doctors found it to be nothing serious and Lai went on to safely deliver her twins, albeit prematurely.
Ma was reportedly so happy to finally be a father that he has already ordered a sumptuous feast to commemorate his daughters' one month birthday.
The menu, which will feature top-grade bird's nest and abalone, will be prepared by specialists to improve the health of his wife and assist the beauty-conscious Lai in regaining her figure.
