Sally Yeh talks about her career and plans for the future

She's been called the Effervescent Queen of Pop among other things and although Sally Yeh is a veteran in the show business scene, she still steals the show.

The hugely popular award winning singer and actress has been performing for over 20 years and has even collaborated with American singers Tommy Page and James Ingram in the early 1990s.

However, the Chinese pop diva confessed that at that time, she didn’t know how to appreciate the opportunity and just regarded it as work.

“Actually, I’m kind of a dummy... I didn’t know how to appreciate it. I knew who James Ingram was but I just thought this is part of my work and this is what I have to do.”

And unlike many Asian artistes, breaking into the Western market was not a priority for Sally. In fact, she had turned down a few movie roles because she didn’t think they were good.

“One director said he would cast me as Rambo’s girlfriend, and another wanted to cast me as the mistress of John Lone in one of his movies, and I just didn’t want to be those. I wanted a more interesting role, acting wise.”

And Sally got what she asked for – in real life. She married Hong Kong singer-composer George Lam in 1996 and took on the challenging role of wife and mother.

“At that time I was trying to understand how a marriage works because for me, I was always scared of getting married, I didn’t want to get married, and I just thought I’d better find out how these things work – how am I supposed to cook and how am I supposed to be a wife. I was taking care of the step kids and trying to create a more normal life at that time,” said Sally.

Though Sally is still as clueless as before, she says it’s best to just be yourself, “I realised it is not about a plan, and it is not about a ritual or anything like that. It’s just about being yourself actually... you shouldn’t plan that much.”

And things have worked out well for the singer.

These days, Sally does what she loves - singing and performing - and is able to pick and choose the work she wants.

“I’ve always not been in it for the love of the limelight or the love of being famous. I did it because I love to do it." - CNA

Catch Sally Yeh live at her “Love Sally - A Special Valentine's Day Concert” on Saturday, 10 February, at the Suntec Singapore Convention Hall.
