SINGAPORE: Local movie "881" is now the top grossing film in Singapore, overtaking Hollywood blockbusters such as "Bourne Ultimatum" and "Rush Hour 3".

This is based on the movie's box office takings over the past three days.

MediaCorp Raintree Pictures said the movie did better in its second week, compared to its opening week.

The "881" movie soundtrack has also been snapped up before it was officially launched.

Over 5,000 copies of the "881" soundtrack have been sold since 8 August, before its official launch on Thursday at St. James Power Station.

Artistes said the Hokkien songs have proven to be a hit, even though they are usually associated with the older generation.

Ngak Ng, artiste from Funkie Monkies Production, said: "I think if people are willing to accept the music and fuse it with other structures of modern music – why not? I've never really liked Hokkien music, but I am starting to love it already."

Producers said in the 12 days since its release, "881" has already broken the million-dollar mark in terms of box office takings.

Even Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said he enjoyed it very much.

Responding to media queries, Mr Goh said the focus of "881", which is getai or song-stage performances, adds to the colour and diversity of Singapore.

He said getai seems to have taken the place of Teochew wayang, which has difficulty recruiting performers and may disappear from Singapore's local cultural scene.

Mr Goh added that it would be good if getai could help to preserve Singapore's street cultural heritage.
