Fresh off the smash opening weekend of its movie "Iron Man," Marvel Studios has announced plans for a sequel.

The company said it plans to release "Iron Man 2" in April 2010 and Robert Downey Jr will reprise his role as billionaire industrialist Tony Stark in the sequel.

Raking in US$102.1 million on its debut, "Iron Man" is one of only 10 movies ever to gross US$100 million in its opening weekend. The action film was expected to bring in US$70 million - US$80 million in ticket sales over the three-day period.

More 'Marvel'ous films in the works include "The Incredible Hulk" which opens June this year, the big-screen adaptation of another Marvel comic book character, "Thor," in June 2010, followed by "Captain America" and "The Avengers" in 2011.
