Frontman of Black Eyed Peas, will.i.am, has won the Webby "Artist of the Year" award for his internet video which was produced in support of US presidential hopeful, Barack Obama.
The collage-style music video, "Yes We Can", was inspired by one of Obama's speeches delivered after the 2008 New Hampshire primary. The video has reportedly been viewed more than 17 million times since it came out in February.
The Webby Awards honours excellence on the internet. Established in 1996, the Webbys are presented by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences – a 550-member body of leading Web experts, business figures, visionaries and creative celebrities.
Other notable winners of this year's Webbys are satirical comedian Stephen Colbert and French director Michel Gondry.
The former, who hosts the cable talk show, "The Colbert Report", has picked up the Webby "Person of the Year" award for the innovative way in which he uses the internet, while Gondry has been recognised for his film, "Be Kind Rewind", which is said to have inspired filmmakers to recreate scenes from their favourite films and to share them online.
As for the website category, The New York Times website has picked up eight Webbys for its online and mobile news services, and The Onion has picked up seven Webbys for its online film and podcasts.
The winners, who will be honoured at a gala ceremony in New York on June 10, have to adhere to a strict rule of a five-word limit for acceptance speeches.
