It looks like David Archuleta will need to finish his run on "American Idol" without the aid of his dad.

According to reports, Archuleta's dad, Jeff, has had his backstage access revoked, leaving his son to practice on his own as the series heads to a conclusion.

David is one of the final three contestants left in the competition. He will fight it out with David Cook and Syesha Mercado for the "Idol" title and a recording contract.

The likeable 17 year old from Utah is blessed with a mature voice beyond his years and an infectious stage presence. A few years ago, David suffered from a rare form of vocal paralysis. He declined to have a risky surgery and has since undergone a remarkable recovery.

However, his father’s intense backstage involvement had become a source of concern for the series, a person connected with "Idol" said, but it was a lyric change on last Tuesday's show that pushed producers to act.

Jeff was accused of crossing the line when he wanted David to alter his “Stand By Me” performance by adding a verse from Sean Kingston’s 2007 summer hit “Beautiful Girls.”

Reports said that Jeff disregarded the producers’ objections, which led to problems with the song’s publisher. Despite being banned backstage, Jeff will still be allowed to sit in the audience during the live show.

A few weeks ago, the early favourite forgot several lines during his version of the Beatles' "We Can Work It Out", which was an unusual mistake for him. Sources say that Jeff Archuleta may be putting too much stress on the young David.

He reportedly yelled at David during one of the recording sessions because he was not happy with his son's singing, bringing him to tears.

This, however, may not be the first time Jeff has seemingly become too concerned with his son’s success.

Sources said that he was also banned from the set of "Star Search" when David competed on the programme when he was 12 years old. It was rumored that Jeff had allegedly harassed a girl named Tiffany, who was David's competition in the contest.
