Missouri rocker David Cook beat fan favourite David Archuleta by 12 million votes to be crowned 2008’s American Idol.
25-year-old Cook won the competition with 56 percent of the record 97.5 million votes cast in the Season 7 finale, one of the most anticipated finals in the history of “American Idol.”
"This is amazing," Cook said. "This is all your fault," he added, addressing his brother, who he had accompanied to the "Idol" auditions to lend support, but wound up getting on the show.
Cook has been a serious contender all season long, wowing viewers with updated versions of pop classics like Lionel Richie's "Hello" and Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean."
His win, however, shocked many as the “Idol” judges had predicted it would be a clean sweep for Archuleta.
Just before the winner was announced, "Idol" judge Simon Cowell apologised to Cook, saying the remarks he had made the night before were "verging on disrespectful."
He had criticised Cook for choosing a song he had never performed before - Collective Soul's "The World I Know" - during his last chance to woo voters and called the evening "a knockout" by Archuleta.
