SINGAPORE: Crazy, wild, hyperactive, and with a choice name for itself, Dutch group The Lunatics rounded off the Singapore Arts Festival over the weekend with a big splash, literally, at the Bedok Reservoir.
Performing on floating platforms and boats with songs, dances, and spectacular props, the 45-minute play "Hydro Sapiens" was based on the theme of love, and sidelined with themes of betrayal and jealousy.
Hailing all the way from the Netherlands, the group has been performing ingenious theatre for more than 12 years, bringing their brand of powerful poetic imaginary that plays on the four archetypal elements of air, fire, water and earth, to countries all over the world.
With a cast and crew of about fourteen actors and technicians, "Hydro Sapiens" took place at the edge of Bedok Reservoir, which has a ready supply of their main prop - water, from Friday to Sunday.
The play attracted over 15,000 to 17,000 curious spectators and art lovers who were not afraid to get wet and dirty in its three-day affair.
Apart from the main storyline, Artistic Director of The Lunatics, Koos Hogeweg, said that the performance also teaches the importance of water.
"It's (also) about this concern that when you live on this earth, then you have to make sure that water is a gift to you, and you have to take care of that," he said.
While the entire performance was conducted entirely on the reservoir, with props operated by its water and actors diving in and out as part of the play, The Lunatics assured that all products used in "Hydro Sapiens" was environmentally friendly and would not affect the water.
According to Hogeweg, the Public Utilities Board (PUB) of Singapore had run positive tests on the water both before and after the performances.
The group will be bringing their performance to Europe after Singapore.
