SINGAPORE : Classical ballet meets new wave hip-hop head on in an energetic and high octave dance performance that is set to send adrenaline pumping at Singapore's Esplanade Theatre over the weekend.
Presented by one of Korea's world renowned leading new wave hip-hop dance theatre, the 80-minute dance extravaganza features 19 break-dancers who spin a story through electrifying dance routines – a new concept in performing arts that has sold out shows world wide.
Formally known as "The Ballerina who loves a B-boy" and now renamed "B-Boyz & Ballerina", the dance item shows a ballerina who assimilates to street dancing after falling in love with a B-Boy (a term for a person who break-dances).
According to stage manager of B-Boyz & Ballerina, Lee Joo Hyun, the cultural clash between these two dance forms – classical and luxurious ballet versus the boisterous and rough street dance – would ironically bring about the integration of different dances.
The crew is made up of Korean hop-hop dancers who were either scouted from the streets while performing their art or dancers who approach the company for jobs as professional break-dance performers.
Despite coming from a different part of the world, audiences need not worry about the language barrier as Lee assured that the show would be in a 'language' dance lovers would understand.
"(The crew will not) speak in the play... but it's very easy to understand the story because dance is a universal language," explained Lee.
Audiences can expect to see some of the best and toughest street dance displays on one stage, with gravity-defying floor routines, skillful popping and locking and Technicolour street fashions.
The dance performance will tour America, Japan, China and Spain after Singapore.
B-Boyz & Ballerina takes street dancing to centre stage from Friday to Sunday at Singapore's Esplanade Theatre.
