LOS ANGELES : For the first time ever, TV buffs can find out which of their favourite primetime programmes have been shortlisted for the Emmys, US television’s highest honours, way before the event.
In the past, nominees for the top 10 comedies and 10 dramas were kept under the wraps by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
ABC’s castaway thriller "Lost" which scooped up the award for Best Drama series in 2005, has made it to the list of 10 drama finalists, together with past nominees - ABC’s courtroom saga “Boston Legal” and medical shows "House" from Fox and ABC favourite "Grey's Anatomy".
Joining the drama list are critically acclaimed but low-rated NBC series “Friday Night Lights”, serial killer drama “Dexter”, AMC’s new period piece “Mad Men”, the FX legal drama “Damages”, Showtime’s historical romp “The Tudors” and the final season of HBO’s “The Wire”.
Making the top 10 comedy list are CBS’s “Two and a Half Men”, Fox’s animated series “Family Guy” and ABC newcomer “Pushing Daisies”.
Emmy comedy winners for the last two years, NBC’s “30 Rock” and “The Office” are also on the list, as well as veteran programmes by HBO, namely “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Entourage”. New arrival “Flight of the Conchords”, ABC's "Ugly Betty" and Showtimes’s “Weeds”, complete the list.
Ten shows in each category, voted by the entire television academy, will be halved to five nominees. The five finalists are determined by the “blue ribbon” panels of academy members who will judge the contenders and the results are expected to be announced on July 17 this year.
