SINGAPORE : Comedian Mike Myers' latest movie, "The Love Guru" has been given a NC16 rating by Singapore's Board of Film Censors because of its crude, sexual humour.
The comedy about a self-help guru, Guru Pitka (Myers), who is approached by a Canadian hockey team owner to reconcile their star hockey player, Roanoke (Romany Malco), with his wife. Using unconventional methods, the guru manages to bring the couple together.
Mr Vijay Chandran, Chairman of the Films Consultative Panel, said, "The FCP recommends an NC16 rating in view of the film's sexual humour. The film is really an over-the-top comedy about a new age spiritual guru who spouts simplistic oriental pseudo-wisdom."
Funny as it may sound, the Hollywood comedy which also stars Jessica Alba, however, has angered some Hindus in the United States claiming the movie "lampoons their faith and reinforces misconceptions about their religion".
Though the movie never mentions Hinduism, and Guru Pitka is supposed to be of a fictional faith, viewers linked him to the religion as he comes from an ashram in India, wears Hindu saffron robes, and uses the term "guru".
Thousands have also signed an online petition protesting against the film and some Hindu groups considered a boycott of Paramount Pictures which produced the film.
I guess it worked as the film was a flop in the US, bringing in just under US$14 million on its opening weekend. If you do not appreciate the humour in the "Austin Powers" movies, at least catch "The Love Guru" for the hip-gyrating, mustachioed Justin Timberlake in Speedos.
"The Love Guru" opens September 4 in Singapore.
