NEW YORK: Troubled pop star Britney Spears will have another chance to storm the MTV stage, after receiving a nomination for this year’s Video Music Awards.
Spears is no newcomer to stage blunders on the MTV Video Music Awards.

Five years ago, she shocked viewers when she locked lips with Madonna during a duet and last year, stylists bemoaned her disastrous fashion comeback attempt as she bared her belly and had her legs wrapped in fish-net stockings.

Let’s hope that she will not botch up this year’s performance.

Her video "Piece of Me", which was filmed in Los Angeles in November 2007 showcases paparazzi photographers following her everywhere she goes and places her at the centre of media headlines, is in the running for the coveted Video of the Year award.

Ironically, Spear’s music career has been overshadowed in the last year or so by her erratic behaviour and legal battle with her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, over custody of their two sons.

Thankfully, Spears appears to have been getting her act together since her father was named conservator of her affairs, following her treatment for psychiatric issues earlier this year.

She also reached a settlement with Federline last week regarding custody of her children.

The pop princess, who is facing tough competition from Katy Perry with "I Kissed a Girl", Rihanna’s "Take A Bow", Jordin Sparks’ "No Air" and Mariah Carey’s "Touch My Body", was also rumoured to be opening the event again this year.

According to a source quoted by the Mirror, "They are going to leave it up until the week before to decide. But they can only advise her - Brit will do her own thing."

This year marks the first time that the fans will select nominees - and the eventual winners - via online voting.

Singapore viewers can catch MTV’s 25th annual Video Music Awards cable channel MTV Asia on Monday, September 8, at 9.30pm.

The event will be hosted by controversial comedian/actor Russell Brand, best known to American audiences as the star of "Forgetting Sarah Marshall".
