LOS ANGELES: Laurence Fishburne will join hit US television series "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" while the star of the series, Willian Peterson, sets to exit.
The Oscar-nominated actor will play a former pathologist turned college lecturer who teaches a course in criminology before eventually joining the Las Vegas Crime Lab featured in the show.
When CBS asked executive producers Carol Mendelsohn and Naren Shankar for their views on potential actors for the series, they said Fishburne had been their top choice.
"He is a powerful and intense actor, with an incredible range," they said. "For all of us at 'CSI', this is truly a dream."
Fishbourne's past films include "The Matrix", "Mission Impossible III" and "Apocalypse Now".
In the meantime, the show's producers are planning for the mid-way exit of Peterson, their leading man, in the show's upcoming ninth season.
CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler said talks had started since last year for the departure of Peterson, also an executive producer for the show, but the exit is "certainly not the last time we'll see him".
