Calls for Avril Lavigne's concert to be banned in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Avril Lavigne’s concert in Malaysia has been cancelled as it was deemed inappropriate for Malaysian culture, said the Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry on Tuesday.

A senior official from the culture ministry’s department, Shukran Ibrahim, said the date of the concert was not appropriate as it could taint the country’s independence day celebrations.

"It is not timely. It's not in the good spirit of our National Day. If we go ahead with the concert, it is contrary to what we are preparing for," said Shukran.

The move by the government came after the youth wing of Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party called for a ban on the concert, criticising the show as being “too sexy”.

The concert’s organiser, Galaxy Group, had advertised the Grammy-nominated singer’s concert before obtaining the approval from the government. More than half of the concert tickets have reportedly been sold.

Lavigne had planned to kickstart "The Best Damn Tour" in Kuala Lumpur on August 29, two days ahead of independence day. She will perform at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on September 7 and end her month long tour of Asia in Beijing on October 6.
