TEHRAN: Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani has been banned from leaving the country over her appearance in a Hollywood production, said state news agency IRNA on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old acted in “Bodies of Lies”, a movie on a CIA agent who is sent to track down an Al-Qaeda leader in Jordan.
Golshifteh was at the airport to Hollywood on Tuesday when she was stopped by the Iranian authorities, said IRNA, quoting an informed source.
To appear in foreign movies, Iranian actors are to obtain the approval from the ministry of culture and Islamic guidance.
Earlier, an Internet site Tabnak had questioned the non-action of the authorities against Golshifteh, and disapproved of her acting in "Body of Lies".
Golshifteh's film credits include "Half Moon" by Kurdish director Bahman's Ghobadi, which won the 2006 Golden Seashell in the San Sebastian International Film Festival, and the controversial "Santouri", a story of a musician who turned into a drug addict.
Conservatives had criticised the film for depicting Iran as a drug-filled society.
“Bodies of Lies” is the latest offering by Ridley Scott and is the first time a Hollywood production uses an actress living in Iran. The star-studded cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe.
