HOLLYWOOD, California : Fans of “High School Musical” were astounded by a surprise visit from the stars of the smash hit during an exclusive sneak peek of "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" (HSM3).

The event, the Ultimate Fan Pep Rally, was organised for ardent fans of the show on Saturday at El Capitan Theatre. The fans came in the signature Wildcat colours of red and white, and were treated to an unreleased musical number, “A Night to Remember”, in the new movie.

However, the biggest treat came when Zac Efron, who plays the clean-cut captain of the basketball team Wildcats, Ashley Tisdale, the scheming rich girl Sharpay Evans on the show, and other stars of HSM3 appeared.

“It was the ultimate surprise," said Tisdale. “A thousand fans showed up to watch the first two movies and to be the first to see some new footage from ‘High School Musical 3’. Then we all walk out - surprise! - and the whole place goes crazy.”

Director Kenny Ortega, who had helmed the first two films for Disney Channel, was also present.

“We owe the success of the first two films to the fans,” said Ortega. “And now that we’re taking the phenomenon to the big screen October 24 with ‘High School Musical 3’, we wanted to show them some appreciation with a few surprise visits from their favorite stars.”

Fans had won the entry ticket by calling into Radio Disney, KIIS-FM and KABC-TV. The first 200 fans who had presented a copy of their MySpace profile at the Pep Rally - showing they had added Black Curtain Screenings and HSM3 to their top friends on the online social networking website - were also awarded entry.

HSM3 will see the reunion of Troy (Zac Efron) and Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens) in their senior year and facing the likelihood of separation as they head off to different colleges. Together with the rest of the Wildcats, the extravagant musical delivers elaborate music and dance numbers to reflect the experiences, hopes and fears about the future of everyone’s favourite high school students.
