LOS ANGELES : She gave the world the little black dress, the classic quilted 2.55 handbag, the best-selling perfume of all time and clothing that freed women from the constraints of the corset.

Forty years after her death, the spotlight has not faded on the legendary fashion icon Coco Chanel.

In the most keenly anticipated film, "Amélie" star Audrey Tautou, 32, will play the designer before she became famous in "Coco avant Chanel".

The biopic will explore the troubled early years and meteoric rise of the orphaned hat maker from Paris, who came to revolutionise the male-dominated wardrobe and redefine the notion of chic.

Directed by Anne Fontaine, the French film will also star American actor Alessandro Nivola, who will play Chanel’s lover Arthur Capel, a dashing polo player who sponsored the fashion designer and influenced her masculine couture designs.

Karl Lagerfeld, art director of the House of Chanel, has been signed up to supervise the recreations of the designer’s costumes and accessories.

Production on the movie is due to start in Paris on September 15, and the Warner Bros film is set for release in 2009.
