SINGAPORE: Syakirah Noble could very well be the next big thing in the Singapore music scene. Here’s the kicker: She’s only eight years old.
TODAY was treated to her singing — an evocative rendition of Diana Ross’ "If We Hold on Together", in the original key, no less — during a preview on Wednesday of the upcoming Great Eastern International Kids Performing Festival to be held from Dec 7 to 10.
Organised by Precious Entertainment, the four-day festival will showcase young talent from Singapore and abroad. Events planned include ticketed and free performances, workshops and competitions.
Helming this festival is music veteran Kuo Po, 46, whose work with JazzKids recently saw the local team win not one, but four gold medals at the World Championship of Performing Arts in Los Angeles in July.
According to Chiang Boon Kong, managing director, strategic resource management, Great Eastern Life, it was natural they would sponsor this festival. “Children are the future,” he said. “Everyone was quite amazed by their talent.”
Along with JazzKids, other performers will include a capella group Vox Box, Filipina child prodigy Julia Abueva, Paul Green’s the School of Rock All-Stars from the United States, as well as performing groups from local and international schools.
Parents can also send videos of their children performing in a video contest and stand to win up to S$1,000 in cash. - TODAY/ra
