SINGAPORE: American singer Tony Orlando is set to make his maiden appearance in Singapore as part of his ‘Yellow Ribbon Tour’ at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on September 16.
Best known for his hit single ‘Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree’, the evergreen sensation said Singapore has always been a “dream” destination for him to perform in.
“This being my first time to Singapore, I’m looking forward to meeting the people,” he said in an email interview with Channelnewsasia.com.
“I want to continue to experience all of Asia that started with my last tour in 2006, which started in the Philippines, and went on to Taipei, Bangkok and Genting.
Born and raised in New York City, Orlando began hitting the national charts at the age of 16 with bouncy middle of the road tunes from the ’70s like "Halfway to Paradise", "Knock Three Times" and "Candida".
Of course, “Tie a yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree” was the song that really propelled him to massive fame. It was the number one song for 1973, and was an American anthem of hope and homecoming in times of war.
Singapore audiences can reminisce the pop culture phenomenon of the '70s as Orlando belts out these golden hits at the concert. But he is also expected to spring some surprises.
“We’ll do some Led Zeppelin. I try to hit every musical base and cover every musical era so that people won’t go, ‘Oh, that’s not my time.’”
Apart from singing, the 64-year-old has also tried his hands in movies, variety shows and Broadway.
Said Orlando: “I love all aspects of show business, but I enjoy live performaces the most, especially concerts and Broadway. Because the live connection with an audience is immediate, rare and special.”
Having sold a million records, attained five number one hits, starred in a popular television variety series and received multiple awards later, the veteran in the industry is still going strong, and said he has no plans to hang up his microphone.
“I will never retire,” he declared. “I have no plans to slow down and considering I’m two years younger than Paul McCartney and four years younger than Ringo Starr, we all still have a long way to go.”
Tony Orlando will perform at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on September 16, 8pm. Tickets at S$78 - S$178 from Sistic.
