SINGAPORE: Singapore’s film industry has been given a boost, as two young Singaporean filmmakers have been selected to compete at the UK’s leading short film festival this year.
The Encounters Short Film Festival, which takes place at the Watershed centre in Bristol every November, attracts entrants from around the globe.
Anthony Chen and Boo Junfeng's works were featured at last year's Encounters as part of a Singapore Showcase but this year, their short films "Haze" and "Kelular Baris" respectively, are in the prestigious International Panorama competition. Previous winners include "881" director Royston Tan.
Chen said, “I am most excited about having my film 'Haze' screen at Encounters, after having 'Ah Ma' screened at the Singapore Showcase last year. Encounters has a reputation of being one of the best festivals for shorts in Europe and it's great to have the film shown in a notable British festival, which means even more to me now since I'm currently a student in the UK.”
Director of the Singapore Film Commission Kenneth Tan has also been selected as one of the main juries at the festival this year. Tan, who is also the chief operating officer of Singapore's Media Development Authority, will help choose the best 90-second film for the festival's DepicT! competition.
Watershed’s creative director Mark Cosgrove who visited Singapore in March to learn more about the development of the industry here, was impressed by what he saw and decided to invite Tan to join the jury.
Mark Cosgrove said, “For me, Singapore filmmakers are making some of today’s most exciting and frankly, cinematic, short films. So, we are delighted to be screening new work from new creative talent this year, and honoured to have Kenneth Tan - a real dynamo in the Singapore and, indeed, global film industry on the DepicT! jury.”
This year’s Encounters Short Film Festival takes place from November 18 to 23, and has attracted about 1,200 entries from 63 countries.
