LOS ANGELES: It seems there will be one major change with the Oscars next year, but it is not going to be a change of programming.

According to the Associated Press, the Oscars will start allowing television commercials for movies to air on the Oscar telecast starting with the February 22 ceremony.

On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences board decided to ease the 58-year-old ban which was implemented when the Oscars first aired on television in 1950.

“This is an opportunity for there to be more entertainment content about movies in a show that’s celebrating movies,” academy spokeswoman Leslie Unger said.

There are heavy rules though.

Only one spot per movie distributor is permitted during the Oscar show, and the commercial has to be brand new; not having aired elsewhere previously.

In addition, the commercial can promote movies opening no earlier than the end of April, two months after the Oscars. The use of the terms ‘Oscar’ and ‘Academy Award’ will be banned.

Likewise, ads for movie sequels and prequels will also not be allowed.

The ad ban has been in place for appearance’s sake, so viewers would not get the impression that studios paying for commercial time had any direct role in picking Oscar winners.
