LOS ANGELES: Iron Man will have a new sidekick in the form of Don Cheadle in “Iron Man 2”.

Cheadle will step into the shoes, or silver armour suit, that Terrence Howard has vacated.

Howard and Marvel Studios parted ways due to “financial differences”, and Howard’s “Crash” co-star will replace him as Jim Rhodes who is set to play a much bigger role in the sequel as Tony Stark/Iron Man’s ally War Machine.

Robert Downey Jr will return as the title superhero, and Gwyneth Paltrow will reprise her role as Stark’s assistant and love interest, Pepper Potts. Jon Favreau will be back as director of the sequel.

The 2008 summer blockbuster “Iron Man” was a box-office hit, raking in US$575 million worldwide.

“Iron Man 2” is slated for a May 2010 release.
