LONDON: His 1987 single "Never Gonna Give You Up" topped the charts in 16 countries.
Never mind that it has been more than 10 years since he released the single, Rick Astley’s prominence never seems to be faltering.
On Thursday, he will vie with rock bands U2, Tokio Hotel and Greenday and pop stars Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera for the Best Act Ever at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2008.
Preparations for the 15th edition of the award show are in full swing in Liverpool and fans can expect a stellar line-up of performances by stars such as Beyonce, Pink, Duffy, The Killers, Take That, Estelle and Kayne West.
British duo The Ting Tings consisting of Katie White and Jules De Martino are the latest artistes to join the line-up. Their debut album "We Started Nothing" is the first debut UK-brand album to achieve Platinum status to date.
Although based in Europe, the awards tend to be dominated by big names in American music.
Spears who scored a hat trick at the MTV Video Music Awards in September, has been nominated for three categories; Best Act Ever, Album of the Year and Act of 2008 where she is up against Amy Winehouse, Coldplay, Leona Lewis and Rihanna.
Many of the artistes have also been nominated for multiple awards.
British alternative band Coldplay who topped the charts with their latest album "Viva La Vida", have been named in the Album of the Year, Act of 2008 and Most Addictive Track categories for the single "Viva La Vida".
Similarly, Duffy will contend for the Best Album award for her breakthrough album “Rockferry” and her addictive track “Mercy” will vie for Best New Act, alongside One Republic, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry and the Jonas Brothers.

Linkin Park and Metallica both appear in the Headliner and Rock Out categories, while R&B singer Alica Keys has garnered votes for Best Album and Ultimate Urban categories.
American singer-songwriter Katy Perry will host of the MTV Europe Music Awards.
Dubbed by senior VP and executive producer of the awards Richard Godfrey as “one of the freshest and most successful new artistes to emerge on the international music scene this year”, it is Perry’s first time as an awards show host.
Perry has also been nominated in two categories; Best New Act and Most Addictive Track for “I Kissed a Girl”, alongside Kid Rock’s “All Summer Long” and Pink’s “So What”.
