LIVERPOOL: Fans were “rickrolled”, when 80s star Rick Astley claimed Best Act Ever at the MTV Europe Music Awards on Thursday.
The British singer, who became a phenomenon when an Internet meme known as “rickrolling” tricked millions of Internet users into clicking the video link for Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” video, edged out the likes of U2 and Britney Spears in arguably one of the biggest categories of the evening.
Spears also had a good night at the awards show held at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, taking home awards for Album of the Year for critically-acclaimed “Blackout”, and Act of 2008, which marks a triumphant return following her public meltdown.
The 26-year-old’s comeback trail includes a new album “Circus”, set for a December 2 release, and a documentary to set the records straight on her struggles due to be aired on MTV on November 30.
30 Seconds to Mars was another double winner. The band, headed by movie star Jared Leto, beat Metallica in the Rock Out category, and were named Video Star for their “Beautiful Lie” music video.
Rapper Kanye West won the Ultimate Urban gong, an award to soothe his ego after he famously took to the stage at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards and argued that he should have won Best Video instead of Justice.
The ten-time Grammy Award-winning artiste accepted the award with grace, thanking MTV, his late mother who died from cosmetic surgery complications last year, and his fans.
British singer Katy Perry was named Best Newcomer, edging out tween favourites the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus.
Sir Paul McCartney was presented with the Ultimate Legend Award, a special prize befitting of his fame with The Beatles, the most successful pop act of all time.
The other winners of the night include Pink won Most Addictive Track for “So What”, Tokio Hotel named Headliner of the year, Emre Aydin from Turkey was Europe’s Favourite Act, and Lil Wayne won the Artists’ Choice award.
