NEW YORK : The show that many expected to be the next "Sex and the City", is apparently not.
"Lipstick Jungle", an hour-long series based on the best-selling novel by Candace Bushnell, has been dropped by US TV network NBC.
After receiving mixed reviews about the show’s first season - which was cut short due to the writer's strike last year - "Lipstick Jungle" struggled for viewers in its second season as viewer numbers dropped to a low 5.2 million per episode. The show was pushed from the Wednesday primetime slot to the Friday night slot on October 31, which is considered a “death sentence” for many shows.
Neither Brooke Shields’ name recognition nor Andrew McCarthy’s long standing acting and stage experience could elevate "Lipstick Jungle" to a three of four season series.
This comedy-drama series which stars Shields, Kim Raver and Lindsay Price, focuses on three, rich, fashionable New York career women who try to successfully manage their professional and love lives.
If it's any consolation, at least the series lasted longer than "Cashmere Mafia," the ABC version of the New York career women story, which stars Lucy Liu and Miranda Otto. "Cashmere Mafia" current airs on MediaCorp's Channel 5 on Wednesday at 10pm.
