LOS ANGELES – Heath Ledger's posthumous Golden Globe award for his performance in "The Dark Knight" as well as other accolades will be given to the person that mattered most in his life: his daughter, Matilda.
Ledger’s mother, Sally Bell, said in an interview with People magazine’s website that her son’s award for his portrayal of arch-villain The Joker would be a “fantastic legacy” for 3-year-old Matilda.
“It is such a fantastic and wonderful legacy for his daughter. Matilda will have so many people who will be able to speak to her about her father’s abilities and respect he had in the industry. That is such a wonderful legacy to leave,” Bell said from her home in Perth, Australia.
Bell added she was “bursting with pride” when she learned of her son’s Golden Globe win before boarding a flight in Australia.
On Sunday, "The Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan accepted the award on behalf of the late actor.
“All of us who worked with Heath on 'The Dark Knight' accept this with an awful mixture of sadness but incredible pride,” Nolan said.
“For any of us lucky enough to work with him, I think any of us lucky enough to enjoy his performances, he will be eternally missed, but he will never be forgotten,” he added.
Ledger, who was found dead in a Manhattan apartment last January due to an accidental drug overdose, was only 28. He is a hot favourite to win the best supporting actor Oscar at the Academy Awards on February 22.
