LOS ANGELES : Singer-songwriter Chris Brown has been charged with a felony for allegedly assaulting girlfriend, R&B popstar Rihanna, on Saturday night.
Police said a woman told police she and Brown were in a car travelling in Los Angeles' Hancock Park neighborhood early Sunday when an argument broke out. Brown allegedly stopped the car as the argument escalated.
According to reports, the female victim suffered visible injuries and Brown, 19, was identified as her attacker.
Brown who was not at the scene when police arrived, turned himself in to authorities on Sunday evening.
A Los Angeles police officer said Brown walked into a station around 7pm and was being interviewed by detectives. According to his booking sheet, he is currently being held on a US$50,000 bail under a felony charge.
Both artistes were no-shows for Sunday night's Grammy Awards where they were nominated and scheduled to perform.
The organisers of the show abruptly announced Rihanna’s withdrawal just before the event which was held at the Staples Center.
"We have just been informed that Rihanna will not be attending the 51st Grammy Awards," a spokeswoman said. "We're sorry she will not be performing this evening. We have no further information."
The 20-year-old Barbados-born singer's performance was quickly replaced by a duet between Justin Timberlake and Al Green.
