LOS ANGELES – R&B star Chris Brown has been left fearing for his life after receiving a series of death threats following the release of a photograph of a battered woman who is believed to be his ex-girlfriend Rihanna.

According to In Touch Weekly magazine, Brown remains in seclusion, surrounded by bodyguards because he fears for his life.

"Chris is scared. Not only did he probably lose his career and his girlfriend, but he’s also fearing for his security and his life. The photo was the last straw. The threats started pouring in the moment that appeared," an insider revealed.

"He faces criminal charges and possible jail time, but he’s going to have to deal with Rihanna’s legion of fans and her close-knit friends in the industry," the source added.

The 19-year-old singer has been charged with making criminal threats and is currently still on a US$50,000 bail. Rihanna has reportedly told police that Brown had beat her, choked her until she passed out and threatened to kill her during an argument in Los Angeles on February 7.

Brown is set to appear in court on March 5 to face charges, however Los Angeles district attorney spokeswoman Jane Robison said the court appearance "may not happen" as "we don’t have the evidence yet".

"If (detectives) determine they need more time they’ll set a new date for him to come into court," said Robison.

Once investigation is complete, prosecutors must decide whether to file felony charges, reject the charges if the evidence is insufficient or refer the case to the city attorney’s office if they decide the behaviour was simply a misdemeanor violation.

While he has yet to face any formal charges, Brown has started to attend anger management sessions to repair his shattered good-guy image. The enrollment is believed to have been masterminded by his publicist manager Michael Sitrick, whom Brown hired following his arrest.

He has also been trying to get back into the good books of Rihanna, showering her with gifts for her 21st birthday last Friday, reported New York Daily News newspaper.

"Chris called Rihanna to wish her a happy birthday. He's absolutely trying to get back into her good graces. He knows he's very much in the doghouse right now, and is doing everything he can to show her how sorry he is," a source told the newspaper.
