Amy Winehouse charged with assault in London

LONDON : Troubled singer Amy Winehouse has been denied a US work visa, forcing her to pull out from performing at the Coachella music festival in California.

The 25-year-old was charged with assaulting a fan in the London last week, leading to her being refused entry into America and dashing her plans to play at "one of the biggest shows of her life".

The "Back To Black" singer was set to be one of the headlining acts at the April 18 festival alongside Paul McCartney and The Killers. This would have been her biggest concert in the US to date.

A source close to Winehouse told Daily Mirror newspaper, "Amy is absolutely gutted. She was looking forward to getting back on stage and this was going to be one of the biggest shows of her life. She was second on the bill on the Saturday night to the Killers.

"As well as 75,000 fans, there would have been top record execs there too so she might have even tried out some new material. But because of the court case she can’t get a visa. It’s a real setback after she has been getting clean from drugs in Barbados."

This is not the first time that Winehouse has encountered US visa problems which have resulted in her having to cancel performances.

She had to miss a live performance at the 2008 Grammy Awards after a delay in finalising paperwork forced her to cancel her appearance. Instead, she performed live via satellite from London.

The multi-million album seller is due back in court in Westminster, London, next Tuesday to face claims she punched dancer Sherene Flash in September 2008 at the End of Summer Ball in London.

"Amy voluntarily attended a police station in London,” said her spokesman.

"She was questioned by appointment in relation to an accusation made after the Berkeley ball last year."

She is alleged to have agreed to pose for a photograph, but became violent when Flash asked if her friend could be included in the shot.
