HONG KONG : Canto-pop star Kelvin Kwan who was arrested in Tokyo for marijuana possession in February, has announced that he will take a long break from showbiz.
In a press conference on Thursday, the singer repeatedly apologised and said he will take time off to "reflect and reform".
"I would like to apologise to the people of Hong Kong, my record company, family and fans. My actions have cause much disappointment and sadness, I'm very sorry," said Kwan.
"I take responsibility for my actions and will face the consequences."
Kwan, 25, and Hong Kong pop star Jill Vidal, also known as Wei Si, were arrested in Tokyo's trendy Shibuya nightclub district on February 24 after a row with a 24-hour convenience store shopkeeper who suspected the pair were shoplifting. Police searched them and found 0.2 grams of marijuana in a cigarette they were carrying.
Kwan was released from police custody last Friday while Vidal is still being detained in Tokyo.
"I was released because the Japanese police have completed their investigations and have decided not to press charges against me. I was released without a criminal record," he said.
"During my one-month detention, I had a lot of time to reflect... I am filled with regret and remorse.
"I hope the younger generation can learn from my mistakes and be law abiding citizens, and most importantly, cherish their health, value their life and stay away from drugs."
