The Little Nyonya sweeps Professional Categories

SINGAPORE : It wasn't a clean sweep for "The Little Nyonya" at the Star Awards on Sunday but the popular drama still managed to add another four trophies to its haul, including two Best Supporting Actress awards for Xiang Yun and Ng Hui.

It had already snagged seven awards in the Professional Categories earlier in the week.

"Why are there two winners?" asked a surprised Ng Hui, who played long-suffering maid Ah Tao in "The Little Nyonya".

"The win is very unexpected as all my fellow co-stars had put up great performances... This is dedicated to my daughter, Yi Xin, who is celebrating her birthday today," said three-time winner Xiang Yun.

"The Little Nyonya" also won the coveted Best Drama Serial award as well as the Best Actress award for Joanne Peh.

"My mind is still blank, I really did not expect to win this award. Receiving this award is a recognition for my efforts," said Peh, who had initially auditioned for the lead character of Yue Niang. The part went to Jeanette Aw who was the hot favourite to win the Best Actress award.

"Winning this award gives me the motivation to do my best in my future works and to achieve future nomination in this category."

The Best Actor award went to Chen Han Wei for his portrayal of an Aids victim in "By My Side".

The 40-year-old actor who was accepting his third Best Actor trophy, came dressed for success. Pinned to his blazer was a black rosette which Chen had on when he won the Best Actor awards in 2001 and 2005. Said Chen, "Other artistes have been pestering me for it hoping it will bring them success."

The Best Supporting Actor award went to Chew Chor Meng for his role as a mentally unstable medical student in "The Golden Path", his first drama in two years.

In an emotional acceptance speech, 41-year-old Chew, who is suffering from muscle dystrophy, thanked those who have expressed concern for his illness. Chew was diagnosed with the genetic disease in September last year and while not life-threatening, it is incurable and causes progressive muscle weakness.

China-born actor Dai Yang Tian received the Best Newcomer award, Belinda Lee was named Best Info-ed Programme Host for "Find Me A Singaporean II", and Guo Liang won the Best Variety Show Host award for "Celebritea Break".
