TOKYO : Prosecutors have decided not to charge Japanese pop star Tsuyoshi Kusanagi after the 34-year-old was arrested for public indecency after allegedly stripping naked under the influence of alcohol in a Tokyo park last week.
Kusanagi, a member of popular boy band SMAP, escaped charges because he showed remorse, making a public apology in a televised news conference last Friday. He also had not committed any prior offenses.
The naked pop star was singing and muttering incoherently in the park near Tokyo's Roppongi nightclub district last Thursday and was arrested after he struggled with officers and refused to put his clothes back on.
When news of the incident broke, ads featuring the pop idol and actor were pulled and Kusanagi has been under the radar since his release. He said he would voluntarily refrain from public appearances for an unspecified period to take responsibility for his actions.
