TAIPEI : Since releasing her "Dancing Diva" album three years ago, Taiwanese pop princess Jolin Tsai has been wowing audiences with her audaciously difficult dancing repertoire. Now, she is paying the price for over-exertion and is facing a two-month dancing 'ban' to ensure that she fully recovers from her lower back injury.

Her record company and agency made the decision shortly after Tsai's painful photo session for a jewellery ad. According to reports, the usually resilient singer was in tears three minutes before the photo shoot, and returned to her dressing room and locked herself in.

It was only then that they realised she had aggravated her lower back injury. Apparently, it was so severe that her eyes welled up the moment she stepped into her high heels.

Tsai, 29, is famed for both her dancing prowess and her never-say-die attitude. But her latest dance routine which involves ballet proved to be the final straw. The singer insisted on mastering it in two months when professional dancers require 20 years.

She has since postponed her upcoming three school concerts and six commercial events in China, resulting in a loss of over NT$20 million (S$1 million).

Rumours have it that this dancing ban was imposed to help push sales for the remaining three school concerts. Her first four concerts have generated poor sales, causing organisers to lose some NT$4 million (S$200,000).

However, a spokesman for the organisers has denied claims saying, "If I had to compensate the NT$4 million loss, I would have escaped long ago."

Singapore fans who are eagerly anticipating Tsai's arrival later this month need not worry about a no show.

Despite her injuries, the singer will still be heading to Singapore to promote her latest album "Butterfly" as well as for an autograph-signing event scheduled on May 24. While Tsai is still expected to perform, she will have to stick to just ballads.
