SINGAPORE: With rising costs, it's nice to know you can still enjoy one of life's simple pleasures: Curling up in front of the TV with some pizza.
It's also nice to know that there's no lack of good movies on cable and free-to-air television this month.
And with Star Movies kicking off its Fan Fest 09 (a parade of 62 blockbusters) you'll never have a boring, channel-surfing night from now until the end of next month.
Titles include old favourites such as Silence of the Lambs, When Harry Met Sally and Titanic. More recent ones include Enchanted, Over Her Dead Body and The Ramen Girl.
Here are some other reasons to stock up on soda, chips and microwave popcorn. And tissues.
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
In the second chapter of the Narnia series, the Pevensie siblings return to Narnia with big tasks to accomplish.
They have to overthrow an evil ruler, reinstate Prince Caspian as rightful heir to the throne and restore peace to Narnia. Not a bad day's work for four kids.
Bigger, darker and more grown-up than the first movie. Ben Barnes, who plays Prince Caspian, is pretty cute, too.
>> Sunday (July 5) at 9pm on Star Movies (StarHub TV Ch 58)
War of the Worlds
It's Tom Cruise versus death-ray robotic spaceships. Who do you think is going to win? We don't want to spoil the ending for you, but we all know Tom's too pretty to die.
Based on H G Wells' novel and directed by Steven Spielberg, this is your classic alien invasion, don't-hurt-my-babies sci-fi flick.
>> Sunday (July 5) at 7.15pm on MediaCorp TV Channel 5
P.S. I Love You
Hilary Swank, Gerard Butler and Kathy Bates star in this tearjerker about a young widow who discovers that her late husband has left her a series of letters intended to help ease her pain and inspire her to start a new life.
There will be tears, romance, tears and - did we mention tears?

What Happens in Vegas
Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher may look like they were separated at birth, but they make a pretty good romantic pairing in this romantic comedy about Jack and Joy, two people who spontaneously get hitched during a drunken night in Vegas.
The morning after, they want a quick divorce - but it gets a little complicated when Jack wins millions on a slot machine using Joy's money. Legal issues mean they have to stay married in order to be rich but driving each other insane may not be worth it.

Empire of the Sun
Besides stimulating your intellect with all the history in this movie, you also get to see Christian Bale as a wee little bitty laddie, before he got to be too big for his boots.
J G Ballard's semi-autobiographical novel of his experiences as a wealthy British child who became a prisoner of war in South-east Asia during WWII stars Bale at the age of 12.
Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film also stars John Malkovich and Miranda Richardson.
