SINGAPORE : Rock Star Collective Block Party or RSC Block Party is a collective rally of good intentions.

Through the use of music and the arts, the event aims to raise awareness among Singaporean youths on living an environmentally sustainable lifestyle besides other causes like animal rights, oceanic reef and global disaster issues.

The highlight of the show is a local rock concert featuring music artistes like The Great Spy Experiment, Plain Sunset, The Analog Girl, Astreal and loads more who will be engaging the audience in a fun yet educational manner.

Some may scoff at how this initiative is just another fad amidst the going-green trend, but Wilson Ang from ECO Singapore explains the rationale of fusing music and the green message together.

“The underlying message is that the environment draws no boundaries and it cuts across everything so rock bands can actually play their role (as ambassadors of sustainable living),” said Ang.

Seems that perhaps the youths would find it easier to relate to the musicians as their role models.

The bands are very supportive of this initiative, says musician Razi Razak from Rockstar Collective and they will be the ones subtly introducing green messages between the various musical sets.

Just in case you think the organisers are not walking the talk, Ang adds that a considerable amount of thought has gone into making sure the event doesn’t leave behind a huge carbon footprint.

Small steps in tweaking consumption habits are the way to go.

From controlling the amount of lighting to collaborating with various NGOs, spreading simple messages such as not littering the compound and having the concert-goers recycle their waste, the concert promises not to compromise on fun at the expense of going green.

At the end of the day, the event hopes to be a platform in educating youths with solutions to tackle environmental issues, says Michael Chew from Halide Pictures.

So if you want to party on like an environmentally conscious rock star, head on down to Old School @ Mount Sophia on July 19 to soak up the beats.

The best thing? Admission is free.

But that’s not all.
