SINGAPORE: Still reeling from "The Little Nyonya" hangover even after all these months? Well, "The (Extraordinary) V Conference" could provide some relief. Two Little... er, Big Nyonya darlings are set to make an appearance at the third instalment of FLY Entertainment's comedic play – in the form of Brendon Fernandez and Shane Mardjuki. The two are the latest addition to the "Conference", alongside local comedy queen Irene Ang and her partner-in-crime Chua Enlai, both of whom have been fronting the show for the past years. But the newbies reckon they can hold their own against the veterans, as they both specialise in the field of bad dancing in Nyonya wear. "What I'll be proud to bring to the show is my poor dancing skills," said Shane, who will be spoofing "Little Nyonya" sweetheart Joanne Peh. "The poorer we are at dancing, the funnier it's going to be."
But going up against Ang and Chua is easy, according to Shane, compared with taking on the role of a female.
"My make-up artist shaved my eyebrows," he lamented. "Our heels don't fit, they are nightmares... Our feet are so big we probably have to tailor-make the heels. We can barely walk in them, much less dance!"
But the big Nyonyas are just a small segment of the play, and the pair are sure to feel more comfy pretending to be LV bags on sale outside ION Orchard.
They each also have their own roles, with Fernandez taking to stage as Singapore actor Adrian Pang and UK TV personality Peter Andre, while Shane will dramatise a rojak seller and the labour minister.
Also making an appearance are Amy Winehouse, Patricia Mok, the Pussycat Dolls, Zoe Tay, Fann Wong, and even the Obamas.
Back by popular demand are Mrs Heng, the Peranakan housewife, as well as Guan Yin Ma (the Goddess of Mercy), who will give Shane-the-labour-minister guidance on how to upturn the downturn, and how to tune-up his infamous tune down at the golf course.
Written by Esan Sivalingam and Seah Chang Un, and directed by Beatrice Chia, the "Conference" promises to be more smoothly played out this year, with the foursome taking turns to juggle the show. Apart from sardonic jokes, audiences can also expect a more action-packed show with much dancing – or "trying to dance", as Fernandez put it.
Into it's third year now, Channelnewsasia.com asked the comedic duo what makes the show sell so well.
"Free beer," both deadpanned.
"I guess people can easily associate with the events we are spoofing because everybody would have heard about them," said Fernandez, on a more serious note.
"Nobody would have missed out on the US elections, the AWARE saga or the new casinos. You know the real deal with these events, we just distort them to make them better."
"It's fun, it's funny and it's staged in a club – a more relaxed atmosphere compared to a strict stage play," continued Shane.
Both Shane and Fernandez reckon they are on par on being the more popular extra-value in the play.
"Shane makes a better Nyonya," said Fernandez. "He's more of a train-wreck than I am, see?"
"But Brendon plays a better LV bag," continued Shane. "Can't you feel his inner bag-ness radiate?"
The (Extraordinary) V Conference will be held September 4-13, 8pm at Zirca. Tickets at Sistic at S$48, inclusive of a drink. Rated R18, in English, Mandarin and Hokkien with English subtitles.
