SINGAPORE : Starting a business is no easy task, what more if you are a housewife with no working experience.

Well, you no longer have to go it alone. “Housewives Pte Ltd”, a new Channel 8 reality television programme, aims to help housewives turn their skills into small businesses.

Uncommon perhaps, but highly achievable as true entrepreneurship knows no age or gender.

Dasmond Koh, who co-hosts the programme with Quan Yi Fong, told Channelnewsasia.com that he found the whole concept of the show rather interesting.

Before he got in touch with the participants, he had no idea that some housewives longed to have their own businesses, or wanted to work to make ends meet.

“You would have thought that they would be happy-go-lucky... Everyday staying home to look after the kids, watching TV, or the tai-tais [would be] playing mahjong and then going shopping,” the 37-year-old remarked.

But not all housewives are ladies of leisure, in fact, many yearn to do more to contribute to their families.

Many of the housewives featured on this programme come from lower income families and have children to support. There’s even a divorcee who is a single mother.

The show, which debuts October 5, aims to help these housewives take that first step into starting their own businesses by bringing in professionals to evaluate their skills and offer valuable advice.

Participants will then have to hunt down suitable training and the entire learning process will be caught on camera.

But it doesn’t end there. Once businesses have been established, they will be featured on the series and introduced to viewers. The programme will also check back on businesses to see how they are performing.

There were many innovative business concepts thought up by the housewives, such as a maid training service or an ‘on call’ cooking teacher.

One tai-tai was so good at shopping that she even started a marketing service to procure second-hand goods for customers within their budget range.

However, not all participants were successful.

Koh recalled one housewife who did not have the knack for her passion – party planning.

“I think it takes quite a bit if you want to be a party planner,” Koh opined.

“You really need some characteristic in you so that you can create the whole atmosphere and the environment.”

“We are still in the midst of brushing up and polishing whatever we can do for her.”

"Housewives Pte Ltd" airs every Monday starting October 5, at 8pm on Channel 8.
