SINGAPORE: Despite the heat and sometimes uncooperative sound system at Fort Canning Park on Friday, fans of No Doubt lapped up every move the rock band made at their first overseas gig after a five-year hiatus.
Led by popular frontwoman Gwen Stefani, the band explained – prior to their concert – why it took them this long to get back together.
"Well, I had two babies, there's nothing I can do to rush that. I mean that just takes as long as it's going to take...what else happened? I did my records which took a little time and toured a little bit. We did it as fast as we could," Stefani said.
While it has been more than 10 years since their monster hit "Don't Speak" hit the airwaves, the band's already hard at work on a new record which could be released as soon as next year. But will the music change?
"It's early days to answer that question. I mean, we were home for a week and we got together, Tony and I, and we actually came up with one little thing. But you know, it's early days, it's going to take a while. It's a very treacherous and torturous process of song-writing. Looking forward to it though," she quipped.
With all band members now married with kids except for bassist Tony Kanal, one thing that has changed is the backstage vibe.
Tom Dumont, guitarist, said: "It is a little mellower as far as parties go, but it's a different kind of wild. It's like three-year-olds running around and screaming, and fighting. It's pretty awesome. Our kids are an extension of us and it's just weird to see our little guys just playing together as friends."
Despite the changes in their lives, the band said they still work well together.
"The one thing that we realised doing this tour, after the 58 shows in North America, is how lucky we are to be together for such a long time as a band, and we have so many memories.
"Coming back to Singapore – we've been here twice before – we get to think back to when we came here the first time. How exciting it was and it's just as exciting this time round. It's been a while so we're still fortunate to be doing this. To still get along and be friends, and have the time of our lives," said Kanal.
