SINGAPORE: An original, made-in-Singapore musical is currently playing at The Arts House.
"Lost In Transit" is the first full-length musical written by award-winning local playwright Stella Kon.
The musical follows the ups and downs of Mia's transition from a village girl to a cabaret singer. It is a serious musical with many light-hearted moments.
"This play is really about, not just Mia's journey but about asking the question, whether, how much compromise are you willing to make to achieve your dreams. And it is also a lot about redemption," said Gavin Low, director of Lost In Transit.
Lead actress Bernice Tjong can relate to Mia's circumstances. The 22-year-old Indonesian moved to Singapore two years ago - stepping out of her comfort zone to pursue her acting dreams.
In the show, both Tjong and fellow lead Eugene Ebio have their first on-stage kissing scene. The director tried to help them overcome their awkwardness.
"He threw me with the lead actor into the champagne room and he asked us to practise and we were like, okay, I feel like I'm fourteen again, you know. When you are on-stage and you are playing it, it is so much easier because you are in character," Tjong said.
The cast and crew also faced practical challenges - including a small stage, limited lighting and fight scenes.
"We tried different ways to make it realistic, like for example, different ways of grabbing and strangling without hurting. Poor Bernice got a lot of bruises. In fact, the other actors involved in the fight scene got a lot of bruises," Low said.
The musical is the latest production by Musical Theatre Limited. The arts charity encourages Singapore writers and composers to produce new works which are reviewed, refined and rewritten. It aims to produce a world-class Singapore musical by 2013.
The show’s four-night run at The Arts House ends on Sunday.
