SINGAPORE: Fans of actor-model Bobby Tonelli should prick up your ears because he will be co-presenting radio station Class 95FM's Cartunes (weekdays, 5-9pm) music segment with Jean Danker from Monday.
The Nevada native takes over from veteran radio presenter Tim Oh who returned to Gold 90.5FM to host R&D Nites from 9pm-1am.
"When I heard the offer, I was quite shocked to be honest with you. I went in for a voice test, thinking it's something that would be nice to possibly get into. I didn't hear back form them for like a few weeks and was unsure if my voice was not good.
"And then Erina (Class 95FM's Senior Programme Director) called me one day and she said 'Look I have very good news, we want to bring you on to drive time'," recounted Tonelli, when I caught up with him at the premiere of the sci-fi action thriller "Cubik", an indie short film he stars in.
"I was a bit nervous because it was one of their top shifts. It is quite nerve-wracking to say the least."
The 34-year-old was particularly excited about co-hosting a regular radio show with Danker.
"I've been training (with Danker) for the past few weeks. We have done a lot of trial runs and we get along really well. We bounce off each other, she is great, a lot of fun," gushed Tonelli.
"I mean, most people say that kind of thing, you know it's politically correct, but she is cool. We think along the same lines in terms of what we find is funny, where we are at, we are more open about things."
Despite having the experienced Danker as his partner, Tonelli admitted that he still had the jitters whenever he thought about all the people who will be tuning in on his first day on the job.
"A lot of people would be tuning in to try and hear what this ang moh (Hokkien for Caucasian) sounds like, you know. So it's nerve wracking," said the actor with a grimace. "But I think after the first talk session, it should be good."
Before any Cartunes diehards get worried that the show will lose its charm, Tonelli revealed that the show format remain largely the same for a while to let things settle down.
However, he pointed out that it may evolve into something even more exciting as he gets the hang of things.
"We are going to keep the show format very similar to what it was before. We have a structure but we are sort of going to let the improv (improvisation) happen, let the 'moment' happen as they happen.
"Over time, as we get to get more comfortable with each other, maybe we might change things. Maybe we might even make it more sexy ... you never know. We (the presenters and management) are all open to that," said Tonelli with a mischevious smile.
Catch Bobby Tonelli on Cartunes, every weekday from 5-9pm on Class 95FM.
