SINGAPORE: Singapore actor Alan Tern revealed that "A Song To Remember" will be his swansong during the show's press conference last week.

He expressed that he had left showbiz after almost a decade in the industry to focus on his seven-year-old eyewear wholesale and exporting business.

Tern, who plays Wang Jin Tu, the abusive husband of his wife Priscelia Chan's character Fan Shu Sao in "A Song To Remember", lamented his role in the drama, which revolves around the lives of three cabaret songstresses in 30s Singapore.

"Ever since we got married, we never played a loving couple but always dysfunctional ones," said Tern.

"It's very different from real life and it's a little more extreme because Wang Jin Tu takes opium, abuses and hits his wife and wants to sell off his daughter," said Chan with a chuckle.

Despite his role, Tern said he was overjoyed that he had the opportunity to work with his wife in his final show.

"I am really happy to be able to work with my wife in my last production," said the 35-year-old actor with a wan smile.

"We first met on the set of 'Springs of Life' ... so it's like things have come full circle."

Although Tern appeared pensive and nostalgic about leaving his acting career behind, Chan seemed unconcerned that her husband of four years is departing from showbiz, the industry that brought them together.

"I don't feel anything!

"Because I have a feeling this won't be his last show," Chan said, bursting into laughter.

"I believe his addiction to acting will eventually act up again!"

Chan explained that Tern loved acting, and only decided to end his contract early – Tern's contract was originally set to expire in June next year – because he had no alternative solutions.

"He has to travel a lot each year because of his business. We feel it's not very fair to the company so he decided to leave.

"He had no choice and had to make sacrifices," said Chan.

"A Song To Remember" debuts on November 22, 9pm on Channel 8.
