SINGAPORE : If you’re thinking of jay-walking across the street, discretely dropping a piece of tissue paper anywhere else but a trash can, or even blowing your nose in public, you might want to think again.
On July 25 and 26, look out for two vigilantes clad in luminous yellow uniforms, patrolling the area around the National Museum Stamford Green.
Along with a group of 30 audience members who will be armed with portable headsets, they will be waiting to pounce on and reform unsuspecting citizens who display any wayward or anti-social behaviour.
Brought to you by Perth-based arts group, PVI Collective, "Reform" is a half-hour long interactive social satire, presented as part of the National Museum’s inaugural Night Festival.
Their goal is to explore the issues of conformity and social standards in its out-of-the-box performance.
But don’t worry, no fines or summons will be handed out, though code of conduct cards (similar to the concept of red and yellow cards in football) will be issued.
The only thing these 'social police' ask is that you take a step back and allow yourself to be 'reformed'.
In fact, those who demonstrate exemplary behaviour may just be rewarded with a 'good citizen' card.
Being the first time that this unconventional performance has travelled out of Australia, PVI Collective aren't fazed by the notion that Asians are thought to be a relatively more conservative bunch.
In fact, co-artistic director, Stephen Roger Bull, feels that it is the unpredictability of the audience that makes it interesting and challenging.
“Sometimes the things that go wrong are the things that are more interesting,” he said.
Kelli Lousie McCluskey, PVI Collective’s other co-artistic director, added, “We’re much more interested in engaging the public in the work. So going outside on the street and bringing the audience out with you... For us, we find that really exciting.”
“It makes the performance dynamic!”
Catch Reform on July 25-26, from 8.30pm, at the National Museum Stamford Green.
Registration is required half an hour before each performance.
