SINGAPORE : She maybe one of the most well-respected veteran singers in Singapore’s music industry, but Rahimah Rahim shows no signs of being a diva at all.

In fact, she humbly calls herself a "normal Singaporean" and "a girl next door".

Despite having her start in show business from acting in a Malay movie at the tender age of six, Rahimah says that her singer-musician father was the one who inspired and sparked her interest in singing.

She’s never looked back ever since and released her 12th Malay album in 2006.

“I watched (my father) sing and I thought, ‘Oh that’s very nice’ because I can express my feelings through song,” recalled Rahimah, who says she has absolutely no regrets whatsoever.

Despite taking a ‘pause’ from singing some 20 years ago due to "family matters", it is evident that Rahim has not loss her immense passion for singing.

While she may no longer be performing on stage as much as she used to in her heyday, Rahim says that she nonetheless enjoys singing as a "pastime and hobby".

Hence, July 26 will be one special and rare night when Rahimah takes to the stage at Zouk, performing alongside many of her old counterparts, including popular 1970s and 1980s vocal group Stardust.

These local singing heroes will all be performing as part of this year’s Singapore Heritage Fest.

They will also be joined by up and coming local youth band UnXpected.

Of the younger budding talents who are making their foray into the Singapore music industry, Rahimah has nothing but praise.

“The youngsters nowadays are exposed to so many different genres of music,” said Rahimah, “I think they’re great and I enjoy watching them.”

However, she laments that it is probably more difficult to make it as a musician in Singapore now as compared to during her time.

Having been seen collaborating with the finalists of local reality show "Singapore Idol" a few years back, it is obvious that Rahimah is more than willing to share her wealth of experience with the younger ones.

“Being with them is just to (pass down) all my past experiences to them,” said Rahimah.

Come Saturday night, Rahimah will be showing the younger ones exactly how it’s done as she performs several of her past well-known hits.

“We’ll have a rolling good time!” exclaimed an excited Rahimah.
